Meet the team members who have moved from oil and gas to renewables
SSE Renewables is shaping the future of clean, green energy production through the just transition to net zero.
Pioneering projects like Berwick Bank Offshore Wind Farm will make net zero possible.
To meet UK and Scottish government sustainability targets, the renewable energy sector requires a highly skilled and motivated workforce.
In this blog, we have caught up with SSE Renewables team members who have chosen to transition from previously high carbon roles in the oil and gas industry, into renewables. Katie Black, Christopher Niemi and Ramsay Keay are each working on Berwick Bank Offshore Wind Farm project, bringing different, yet vital, skills required to complete the UK’s largest proposed offshore windfarm. Each member of the team talks about their experience transitioning to a green industry to tackle the climate emergency.

Scotland and energy
Scotland is a global hub for energy production. We are uniquely positioned with our natural environment and resources to generate different types of power, such as, hydropower, oil fields and wind power.
The north east of Scotland in particular is known around the world as a hub for energy production demonstrated through years of oil and gas extraction in the North Sea. This crucial experience in oil and gas has created a foundation for the next generation of energy production, renewables.
As we move away from fossil fuel consumption, we need to ensure we are capturing the years of knowledge built and transferrable skills developed from oil and gas, and use them for renewable energy production.
What is the Just Transition?
The Just Transition is the term used by governments to describe the process of moving to a more sustainable and climate resilient society. The Just Transition creates a greener economy that is fair for all.
What is net zero?
Net zero a goal set by the UK and Scottish governments to ensure our economy is producing enough renewable energy to counteract carbon emissions. The Scottish Government’s target for reaching net zero is 2045, while the UK Government extended its target to 2050.
How will Berwick Bank support the Just Transition to net zero?
Berwick Bank will play a pivotal role in Scotland’s Just Transition to a net zero future powered by clean, green energy. If granted consent, it will be the UK’s largest offshore wind farm and once complete, will have the capacity to produce 4.1GW of power.
This is enough energy to power roughly 5 million homes - the equivalent of all of Scotland’s homes twice over.
